King Ina Academy is an inclusive school where all pupils are supported. Our mission statement for all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) is ‘Within our secure Christian environment, our vision is to develop healthy, happy, motivated learners who aspire to achieve their full potential and who look to the future with confidence. As a school we are very proud of our awards: We have achieved Dyslexia Friendly School Status, and been recognised as a Diabetes Friendly School.

All Somerset maintained schools have a similar approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and we are supported by the Local Authority to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible academic, social and emotional progress in school. Somerset have given priority to ensuring that their SEND provision is fit for purpose and their Core Standards for SEND, has this at the heart of their mission statement:

All children and young people in Somerset have the right to an inclusive education where they feel they belong. An inclusive education encourages all children and young people to be the best they can be, whilst making learning enjoyable and fulfilling; socially, emotionally and academically.

The information within the attached document ‘SEND Information Report’ highlights how we identify, support and assess pupils with SEND to ensure they make appropriate progress.

Mrs Laura Ruddle is the SENCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator), and she works across all sites, working with Owlets, Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Mrs Ruddle is supported in school by a very experienced and capable team of Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) and by Mrs Michelle de Broise at Owlets.

If you need to discuss your child’s needs please speak to their class teacher initially, then make an appointment with Mrs Ruddle by contacting the Infants Office for Early Years & KS1, and the Juniors Office for KS2.

The SENCo works alongside the Senior Leadership Team to ensure appropriate and inclusive provision for all our pupils.
