Guidance on what the new national restrictions mean for education and childcare settings

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on 31 October, new national restrictions will come into force on Thursday 5 November. We have published information on what the new national restrictions mean for education and childcare settings.

This guidance provides sector specific information and covers the latest advice for clinically extremely vulnerable children, young people and staff, and advice on the use of face coverings in education settings.

Guidance on the use of face coverings in early years settings, schools and further education colleges

For education settings teaching pupils in year 6 and below, there is no change to the existing position on the use of face coverings following the announcement on the new national restrictions. It is not mandatory for staff and visitors to wear face coverings. In situations where social distancing between adults in settings is not possible (e.g. when moving around in corridors and communal areas), settings have the discretion to recommend the use of face coverings for adults on site, for both staff and visitors.

In schools where pupils in year 7 and above are educated and further education colleges, face coverings should be worn by adults and pupils when moving around the premises, outside of classrooms, such as in corridors and communal areas where social distancing cannot easily be maintained. Face coverings should also be worn by pupils in year 7 and above when travelling on dedicated school transport to secondary schools or on public transport to college.

Some individuals are exempt from wearing face coverings and we expect adults and pupils to be sensitive to those needs.

Further information on the use of face coverings in early years settings, schools and further education colleges can be found in our guidance on the new national restrictions.

Guidance on what the new national restrictions mean for higher education providers

We have published information for higher education providers on how the new national restrictions affect the higher education sector.

This guidance provides information on staff and student safety, the use of face coverings, online and in person tuition and the use of libraries, study spaces and sporting facilities.

This six-day virtual event is free to attend and run by the EdTech Demonstrator Network. The event will focus on remote education, teacher workloads, lost learning and getting pupils ready for summer exams.

The EdTech Demonstrator Network is available to help schools use and embed technology, where possible, to develop a remote education strategy, foster better links between teachers and their pupils, track pupil progress, promote wellbeing and protect teacher time. This support includes ways to use Google or Microsoft digital platforms in addition to any plans for printed resources.

Further information on the EdTech Demonstrator Network and the resources available to schools and colleges to support remote education, can be found in our guidance on get help with remote education.
