Providers with further education (FE) residential students returning home at the end of term

Under the current national restrictions residential students who normally travel between their further education (FE) setting and home during term time for the purpose of education have been able to continue but have been asked to minimise travel wherever possible.

Students should continue to follow the safe travel guidance when travelling and should:

  •          follow social contact rules
  •          keep their distance when they travel, where possible
  •          wash or sanitise their hands regularly
  •          avoid the busiest routes, as well as busy times like the rush hour
  •          download the NHS COVID-19 app before they travel, if possible, and check in where there are official NHS COVID-19 QR code posters

Should anyone receive a positive coronavirus (COVID-19) test result or be alerted to the fact that they have been in contact with someone who has received a positive test result they should follow the guidance on self-isolation. Students who are required to self-isolate may return to their home if it becomes impractical to remain at their student accommodation, for example because the accommodation will close for the holiday period or there isn’t suitable support available to them if they are ill. If a student is returning home to self-isolate, settings should ensure that this is done in a COVID-secure way, not using public transport.

FE providers should continue to deliver face to face education for the majority of planned learning hours for students on 16-19 programmes of study and may use the existing flexibilities within the FE operational guidance to deliver a blended learning model for adult students that meets the educational objectives of the course.

Support and guidance for those looking to return from overseas to teach in England

The Department for Education is hosting a series of webinars to support teachers looking to return from overseas to teach in England and fill a potential teaching supply gap during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. These webinars will provide information on finding teaching vacancies and practical tips from teachers who have already returned to England.

Each webinar will last for 60 minutes and there will be an opportunity to ask questions and network with colleagues in a similar position. You can register for the first webinar, which takes place on 24 November at 10am.

An online factsheet is also available and covers the key information teachers working overseas need as they consider a return to teach in England. Further information and support can be found at Get into Teaching.

Further personalised help and guidance is available including one-to-one support through the Get an adviser service if you teach maths, physics or modern foreign languages.

The Teaching Vacancies service can be used to search by subject, role in school and full or part-time work, and to set up job alerts.
