Geography

Geography at King Ina School is delivered through three big questions and three big ideas:
Geography at King Ina Academy
Our Vision for Geography

At King Ina Academy, we want every child to develop a curiosity about the world around them, understand the diverse places, people and environments that make up our planet, and become confident young geographers who can ask questions, explore geographical information and develop their own understanding of the world.

Our geography curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum for Geography in England, providing children with a coherent, knowledge-rich learning journey from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 2. We aim to develop children’s understanding of the United Kingdom and the wider world, helping them to recognise the relationships between people and places, appreciate the diversity of environments and cultures, and understand how human and physical processes shape the world in which we live.

In line with the National Curriculum, our geography curriculum focuses on developing locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, and geographical skills and fieldwork. Children learn to locate continents, countries, oceans and significant geographical features, explore similarities and differences between places, and develop an understanding of physical processes, including rivers, mountains, weather and climate, alongside human features such as settlements, land use and economic activity. They also learn to use maps, atlases, globes and digital mapping, interpret geographical information, and collect and analyse data through fieldwork.

We want geography to be engaging, meaningful and inspiring, encouraging children to investigate, question and think critically about the world around them. Through carefully sequenced learning, children build on prior knowledge, make connections between places and environments, and develop an understanding of how people interact with their surroundings. We encourage children to consider important global issues, including sustainability, environmental change and the responsible use of the Earth’s resources, helping them to recognise their role as responsible global citizens.

Our aim is for every child to leave King Ina Academy with a secure foundation of geographical knowledge, the skills to think like a geographer and an appreciation of the world that inspires curiosity, informed discussion and lifelong learning. We want our children to develop a strong sense of place, understand their local area and recognise how it connects to the wider world, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to navigate, explore and care for our planet.
